Premiered in Venice in 1951, Igor Stravinsky’s opera has a libretto by W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman loosely based on the eight William Hogarth paintings and engravings titled A Rake’s Progress. Equal parts tragedy and farce, the tale follows the moral decline and fall of Tom Rakewell, who exchanges a simple life with sweetheart Anne Truelove for the worldly pleasures of London in the company of the devious Nick Shadow. Stravinsky’s score deftly blends elements of 18th-and 20th-century music in this story of love, madness, and bargains with the devil.

The Life and Death(s) of Alan Turing

Chicago Opera Theater joins American Lyric Theater to bring this new opera to life as part of the Vanguard Initiative. After a week of workshops, COT presents a full concert performance of Justine F. Chen and David Simpatico’s intense and beautiful new work. Featuring the Bienen Contemporary and Early Vocal Ensemble of Northwestern University, tenor Jonas Hacker (Lyric Opera’s Fellow Travelers), and baritone Jonathan Michie in the title role, don’t miss your chance to see this one-of-a-kind concert. Staley Music Director Lidiya Yankovskaya conducts.

A historic-fantasia on the life of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. Alan Turing is hailed as the father of modern computing, a groundbreaking codebreaker, and a wartime hero. He was also found guilty of gross indecency, chemically castrated, and found dead by apparent suicide next to a cyanide-laced apple. Delve deep into the mind of the famed scientist as he grapples with secrets, identity, discrimination, and what it means to be an outsider, in this sweeping new opera. Commissioned by American Lyric Theater Lawrence Edelson, Producing Artistic Director

“Our opera imagines the man inside the legend of Alan Turing: his unique perspective of the universe, his unabashed view of his homosexuality, and his impact on the future of civilization. This piece is relevant today not only for restoring Turing to our collective memory, but also because the institutionalized homophobic attitudes faced by Turing continue to threaten the lives of gay men and women across the globe. In fact, this opera is not merely about homophobia, it is about prejudice. This opera celebrates the power of memory, creativity, and the potential within us all to live fully and truly.”

– Justine F. Chen and David Simpatico
