Incredibly Specific Playlists

Materials Needed: Audio or Music streaming service (Spotify and YouTube are free to join)

Objectives:

  • Students will discuss and analyze what makes a “good” playlist

  • Students will curate a 10-20 song playlist of songs which create a highly specific mood (examples below) or are intended for a specific, unique event (i.e. the best home quarantine prom playlist)

Procedure:

  1. Split students into small groups to discuss what they think makes a good playlist and share out with the larger group. Topics might include, transitions, number of artists represented, genres represented, length, “vibe”.

  2. Show students the examples below and assign them to create a 10-20 song playlist using any streaming service that will allow them to share their playlist. The playlist must be for a highly specific mood/vibe or the assignment could correlate to a special event in the students lives.

  3. Post all playlists on class website so students can listen to each other’s work.
