Soundtrack Your Life

Materials: Basic video recording and editing software (TikTok is free, iMovie comes with mac computers, other video editing softwares also exist online for free and for fee).

Objectives:

  • Students will discuss and analyze how soundtracks can change the affect and meaning of a scene.

  • Students will film a 15-60 second scene and edit it with 3 different soundtrack options.

  • Students will describe how and why they chose their soundtrack music.

Procedure:

  1. Show students the following video (linked below) and ask them to notice how the music changes the scenes

  2. Assign students to film a 15-60 second scene. This can be scripted or candid as long as you do not film anyone without their explicit consent which must be submitted in signature form.

  3. After filming their clip, students should use home video editing software to create 3 different versions of their scene, each using different music to create a different mood.

  4. Have students write brief descriptions of how their musical choices changed the scene.
